What is the Morston sailing window?

The Morston sailing window is the usable-light period around high water when harbour sailing at Morston Quay and Blakeney Harbour is typically planned — about ±2 hours around high water. On tides of 5.5 m and above, the window stays open an extra half hour after high water. If the tide is still in after sunset, the window runs until twilight, when usable light for navigating effectively stops.

How are Morston and Blakeney tide times calculated?

Tide times for Morston Quay and Blakeney Harbour are predicted from WorldTides at the Immingham reference station, then shifted by a local knowledge adjustment so they match the harbour clock used on this coast. Heights are on Chart Datum at Blakeney Bar. Times are in Europe/London (BST in summer, GMT in winter). Morston Quay uses the same times as Blakeney Harbour — no extra creek offset.

Are Morston and Blakeney tide times the same?

Datum: Chart Datum (CD) at Blakeney Bar. Heights are 1.4 m below the raw Immingham feed so a typical high water reads around 5 m.

About these Blakeney Harbour times

This is the Blakeney Harbour Association clock: high water for the Pit and for Blakeney Bar. It is the time in the garage booklet. Morston Quay uses this same clock — you walk from Morston into this water.

Blakeney Bar is the seaward entrance. The Pit is the moorings inside. They share this clock. Blakeney Quay does not. The quay at the village sits further up the channel and comes about fifteen minutes later. If you keep a boat on the quay pontoon, use the Blakeney Quay page.

Admiralty EasyTide’s UKHO Blakeney Bar often runs earlier than local habit. This page follows the BHA table. Real tides still vary with a northerly on the Bar or a hard ebb in the channel.

Common questions

What is the difference between Blakeney Bar, the Pit, and Blakeney Quay?: Bar and Pit use this harbour clock. Morston Quay does too. Blakeney Quay is up the Glaven and is about 15 minutes later. Do not take a booklet high water and walk it unchanged to the village quay.
Why don’t these times match EasyTide?: Local convention follows the Blakeney Harbour Association table, also printed at Blakeney Garage. UKHO Blakeney Bar on EasyTide is often earlier. This page is the harbour clock people here actually use.
Is the sailing window for the Pit or the Bar?: It is a harbour-sailing window around this clock — usable light, about ±2 hours around high water. The Bar still needs your own eye: wind against ebb, and less water on a small neap in the Pit.
