What is the Morston sailing window?

The Morston sailing window is the usable-light period around high water when harbour sailing at Morston Quay and Blakeney Harbour is typically planned — about ±2 hours around high water. On tides of 5.5 m and above, the window stays open an extra half hour after high water. If the tide is still in after sunset, the window runs until twilight, when usable light for navigating effectively stops.

How are Morston and Blakeney tide times calculated?

Tide times for Morston Quay and Blakeney Harbour are predicted from WorldTides at the Immingham reference station, then shifted by a local knowledge adjustment so they match the harbour clock used on this coast. Heights are on Chart Datum at Blakeney Bar. Times are in Europe/London (BST in summer, GMT in winter). Morston Quay uses the same times as Blakeney Harbour — no extra creek offset.

About these Blakeney Quay times

Blakeney Quay is not the harbour clock. High and low water here come about fifteen minutes after Blakeney Pit, Blakeney Bar, and Morston Quay. The extra time is the channel up the Glaven to the village.

The booklet on the garage counter is the harbour clock. If you read that time and stand on the quay, you will be early. Use this page — or choose Blakeney Quay in the Morston app — when you are working from the pontoon, the hard, or the quay webcam.

Heights stay on Chart Datum at Blakeney Bar, same as the harbour. The water arrives later; it is not a different tide in metres.

Common questions

Why is Blakeney Quay later than the BHA booklet?: The booklet is Blakeney Harbour — Pit and Bar. The village quay sits further up the channel. Morston uses +15 minutes for the quay, matching local habit. Cley follows the same shift.
Can I use Morston Quay times at Blakeney Quay?: Not if you care about a quarter of an hour. Morston and the harbour share a clock. The quay does not. On a short window that quarter-hour is the difference between still floating and already sitting down.
Is the webcam at the quay?: The Blakeney Quay webcam looks at this water, not the Pit. Times on this page are the ones to read against that view.
Is this for navigation?: No. Planning only. The channel above the Pit shoals and shifts. There is no guarantee of accuracy.
