This harbour
Wells high water is BHA Hull Albert Dock + 40 min (+12 min versus Blakeney). Low water keeps a longer lag (+63 min versus the Blakeney low). Heights are shifted −2.4 m onto the local Wells chart datum. Window length still uses the Blakeney-datum height, so a true spring is not treated as a small tide just because the number on the page is lower.
Local knowledge adjustment
Immingham times are shifted so they match the harbour clock used on this coast. Real tides still vary with wind and pressure.
About these Wells-next-the-Sea times
Wells is not a shifted copy of Blakeney. The Blakeney Harbour Association sets Wells high water at Hull Albert Dock + 40 minutes — twelve minutes after the Blakeney clock. That is the high water on this page.
Low water is a different story. The ebb out over the Wells bar takes longer. Morston keeps that lag — about an hour after the Blakeney low — so you are not caught thinking the harbour has already drained when the channel is still running.
Heights look smaller because they are on the local Wells datum, about 2.4 m below the Blakeney Bar numbers. A 5.5 m spring at Blakeney reads around 3.1 m here. It is the same North Sea tide, not a weaker one. The outer harbour, the channel, and the quay still need the Port of Wells in your head: this is a working harbour, not the Pit.
Common questions
Why is low water at Wells so much later than high water suggests?
The ebb has to clear the Wells bar. High water follows the BHA Wells offset. Low water is given a longer lag so the page does not pretend the harbour empties on a Blakeney rhythm.
Why are the heights lower than Blakeney?
Local chart datum, not less tide. Subtract about 2.4 m from a Blakeney Bar height and you are on the Wells scale. Compare springs and neaps by the range, or in the Morston app with Wells selected.
Is this Wells Quay or the outer harbour?
Times are the Wells Quay / BHA Wells clock used for planning in the harbour. The bar and the outer channel are their own problem — wind against the ebb especially.
